The Center for Health Equity and Research in collaboration with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs hosted a Faculty Workshop for Developing NIH Proposals on January 14th, 2015. Seventeen faculty members representing eight different departments attended the all-day event.
Provost David Dowell welcomed participants and each faculty member had an opportunity to share their research interests. Drs. Dennis Fisher, Kevin Kelley, and Grace Reynolds co-facilitated on topics which included: NIH funding mechanisms, characteristics of effective specific aims, sample size and power calculations, and reviewing criteria for competitive research proposals. Faculty also participated in a group discussion where they shared examples of their specific aims and received feedback.
Participants found the workshop very helpful in providing a general overview on developing a NIH proposal and showed great interest in additional workshops that focus more in depth on the development of specific aims, the NIH proposal submission process, and other research funding opportunities such as foundations.
