The CSULB Center for Health Equity Research (CHER) was proud to collaborate with the CSULB Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) and the CSULB BUilding Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) Program over the summer to bring two instructive workshops to CSULB faculty and staff. The first, “Using NVIVO for Qualitative Research,” was held on June 8th. Don Haviland, PhD and Jonathan O’Brien, EdD, both from the CSULB Education Leadership Department, facilitated this one-day intensive workshop supporting faculty research. The workshop was a full house with faculty from various departments including a faculty member from Aerospace Engineering curious about NVIVO for a collaborative project. The day exposed attendees to the basics of qualitative inquiry and analysis, which allowed them to use NVIVO through multiple cycles of coding, and apply these skills to their own qualitative data.
The second workshop, held on June 14- 15, was “Sample Size and Power Calculations”. This one and a half day training was facilitated by Martin L. Lee, PhD, Adjunct Professor of Biostatistics from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. Dr. Lee made great use of the white board in explaining the material starting with the basics. The faculty seemed to appreciate this approach that can be very helpful when recalling advanced statistics. One faculty member summed up her experience by saying, “This was a great in-depth look at statistical models and the relationship between power and sample size. I can actually see how I can apply these to my work now!” We hope that you will join us for future workshops supporting CSULB research.
