We are fortunate to be hosting Dr. Tony Iton Senior Vice President for Healthy Communities at The California Endowment who will spend the morning with us to share his insights in his keynote address, “A 21st Century Public Health Practice Designed to Build Health Equity.” We encourage you to attend and applaud your commitment to improving our community’s health. The CSULB RIMI Project and Center for Health Equity Research is pleased to bring Dr. Sally Stevens to the Cal State Long Beach campus. Dr. Stevens will present data from 226 substance using adult women enrolled in a sexual health education project between 2008 and 2013. Participants included women who had at least one child under the age of 18 years. Demographic, substance use, and traumatic loss data with regard to mothering will be presented - highlighting differences across race/ethnic groups. The link between historical and intergenerational trauma and substance abuse will be illuminated along with social policies that perpetuate such traumatic experiences. Recommendations for effectively intervening at the individual, family and policy levels will also be discussed.

Betty Ferrell, RN, PhD, MA, FAAN, FPCN has been in oncology nursing for 33 years and has focused her clinical expertise and research in pain management, quality of life, and palliative care. Dr. Ferrell is a Professor and Research Scientist at City of Hope in Los Angeles. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, and she has over 300 publications in peer-reviewed journals and texts. She is Principal Investigator of a Program Project funded by the National Cancer Institute on “Palliative Care for Quality of Life and Symptom Concerns in Lung Cancer” and Principal Investigator of the “End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC)” project. Dr. Ferrell is a member of the National Cancer Policy Forum and was Chairperson of the National Consensus Project for Quality Palliative Care.
