L&SR Literacy and Social Responsibility
Special Interest Group of the International Reading Association

BUSINESS MEETING: SUMMARY OF ACTIONS

Officers & Board Members Present: Andrea Karlin, Kaye West, Marsha Thicksten, Beth Breneman. Presiding: Marsha Thicksten.

Andrea Karlin was nominated and unanimously elected to serve as Program Chair for 2011 and 2012. Melanie Goodman has volunteered to serve as Co-Chair during this time frame, and Andrea graciously accepted Melanie's offer of teamwork.

Treasurer’s Report. $1250.26

Denise Stuart was nominated and unanimously elected as the new Literacy and Social Responsibility Awards Coordinator. A handout describing the nature of the new program and a record of last year’s email conversation about the award, created and compiled by Denise, was distributed and discussed. Members urge Denise to present a proposal for the award program at Minneapolis—including any plans for a monetary award, if there is to be one. Members suggest that Denise lead the discussion and conduct e-mail deliberations between now and May. The following issues need to be clarified by that time, so the publicity can begin in May 2009.

  1. Name?
  2. How to apply?
  3. Publicity?
  4. Nature of the award (a plaque or something physical suggested)
  5. Blurb suggested for IRA’s Reading Today, Web site and L&SR Newsletter

The need for re-creating an electronic distribution list was discussed. Kaye West volunteered to create a new list and look into the technical detail. The following issues were identified for Kaye's consideration:

  1. Include a statement, “If you wish to be removed from this list”
  2. E-list can be used for SIG-related conversation, but not personal business

Ann Kennedy has regretfully withdrawn from the Research Chair position. Members agreed that nominations for a new Research Chair should be sought out via e-mail.

Members present assume that the discussion of these and other items will be continued at the Business Meeting in Minneapolis.

Respectfully submitted by Beth Breneman
