Minutes:
February 23, 2009 - Phoenix, AZ
L&SR Literacy and Social Responsibility
Special Interest Group of the International Reading Association
BUSINESS MEETING: SUMMARY OF ACTIONS
Officers & Board Members Present: Andrea
Karlin,
Kaye West, Marsha
Thicksten,
Beth Breneman. Presiding:
Marsha Thicksten.
Andrea Karlin was nominated
and unanimously elected to serve as Program Chair for 2011 and 2012. Melanie
Goodman has
volunteered to serve as Co-Chair during this time frame, and Andrea graciously
accepted Melanie's offer
of teamwork.
Treasurer’s Report. $1250.26
Denise Stuart was nominated and
unanimously elected as the new Literacy and Social Responsibility Awards
Coordinator.
A handout describing the
nature of the new program and a record of last year’s email conversation
about the award, created and compiled by Denise,
was distributed and discussed. Members urge Denise to present a proposal
for the award program
at Minneapolis—including any plans for a monetary award, if there
is to be one. Members suggest that Denise lead the discussion and conduct
e-mail deliberations between now and May. The following issues need to
be clarified by that time, so the publicity can begin in May 2009.
- Name?
- How to apply?
- Publicity?
- Nature of the award (a plaque or something physical suggested)
- Blurb
suggested for IRA’s Reading Today, Web site and L&SR
Newsletter
The need for re-creating an electronic distribution list
was discussed. Kaye West volunteered
to create a new list and look into the technical
detail. The following issues were identified for Kaye's consideration:
- Include a statement, “If you wish to be removed from this
list”
- E-list can be used for SIG-related conversation, but not
personal business
Ann Kennedy has
regretfully withdrawn from the Research Chair position. Members agreed
that nominations
for a new Research Chair
should be
sought out via e-mail.
Members present assume that the discussion of these and other items
will be continued at the Business Meeting in Minneapolis.
Respectfully submitted by Beth Breneman
