Each semester (Fall, Spring, Summer), CSULB students in the criminology and criminal justice course, CRJU 330/530: Ethics, Values, & Diversity in Criminal Justice, are given the Racist and Anti-Racist Events in Criminology and Criminal Justice Collection assignment. In this assignment, they are required to identify a racist or anti-racist event in the criminal justice system, conduct research on the event (e.g., review journalistic and academic sources, visit the site to take photos, and/or interview those linked to the event), and create media on the event (choices include written blog, video blog, podcast, mini-documentary, and/or presentation).
Stellar projects are identified by their faculty and presented to the School of Criminology, Criminal Justice, and Emergency Management’s Critical Justice Committee for possible selection in the Collection. The Committee is comprised of a minimum of four elected members of the faculty (including tenured/tenure-track; full-time lecturers; and part-time lecturers who have taught at least two semesters in the prior two years within CCJEM).
The committee rates projects on
(1) Overall quality of the project
(2) Demonstration of research
(3) Demonstration of comprehension of the topic
(4) Accessibility of the Info
(5) Validity of the Info
(6) Clarity of purpose
(7) Organization and/or presentation.
Selected students’ works are then maintained in the online Collection for all to access.
All those featured in the Collection have signed a media release.
