Literacy and Service Recognition Award 2013

Compassion to Action

This year the work of a university student is celebrated. The winner is preservice teacher Jenna Dulin of Salisbury University, nominated by her professor and mentor Dr. Patricia Dean. The award committee commends Jenna’s initiative and creativity in promoting peace, understanding, and caring behavior at her university and beyond. In remembrance of Sandy Hook children, she challenged her peers to complete 26 random acts of kindness and write about them on a displayed Peace Wall and in a Peace Book she developed at her college. She created opportunity for dialogue about important issues through this Peace Wall and on a Peace facebook page (facebook.com/SuPeaceBook) she developed. She challenged and invited others to reflect on experiences, put ideas into action, and talk about these. From this emerged international dialogue as evident on the Peace Wall. She also worked to build bridges to understanding and appreciating difference in developing a manuscript for a book, featuring a canine character that questions the negativity of difference and finds a way into acceptance and celebration. We thank Jenna for the thoughtful work she has begun and suspect there is more to come! Jenna closed her submission essay saying “I wish this project to be infectious. It is important to be reminded of the impact that you can make on other people. Something as simple as a smile could change someone's day.” And she added a favorite quote:

"Love is the key to the problems of the world" – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
